Blood pressure ranges

Blood pressure: Blood pressure is the pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels.

Blood pressure includes systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. It is expressed as 120/80. 120 is systolic blood pressure and 80 is diastolic blood pressure.

Systolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart pumps the blood into them.

Diastolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest

The levels for blood pressure as follow:    

                                  Systolic blood pressure 
Normal                      Less than 120 mm/hg 
Prehypertension    120 to 139 mm/hg      
High BP Stage 1     140 to 159 mm/hg             
High BP Stage 2     160 or higher                          
                                  Diastolic blood pressure
Normal                       Less than 80 mm/hg
Prehypertension      80 to 89 mm/hg                                                                      
High BP Stage 1        90 to 99 mm/hg                                                                                                   
High BP Stage 2       100 or higher
